The pocket hole joint is one of
the easiet joints to make. This joint is much faster and simpler than dowel
joints because you only drill the hole in one of the pieces you need to join.
You simply apply some glue, clamp the pieces together, and insert the
screw. |
|
The screw stays in the joint and serves as both a
dowel pin and permanent clamp. Also, you can use ready made plugs to hide the
holes if the surface is to be visible.
Since you only drill the hole in
one piece, you don't need to be concerned with drilling precise holes in both
pieces like with dowels or biscuit joints.
This type of joint is
typically used in cabinet making or any other application where the joint will
be hidden from view. Joining stiles and rails for cabinet face frames is a
natural use for it. Also, attaching the trim under a table top with pocket
holes is faster and less expensive than using angle brackets. If you're like
me, you'll find yourself using it for more and more purposes because it's so
easy.

This jig is simple and easy to make and use. All
you need to do is clamp the workpiece in the jig, set the position of the jig
so the point of the step drill will come out in about the center of the
workpiece thickness. Set the drill press stop so the drill just stops at the
surface of the workpiece support. Designed for up to 1 1/2" workpiece
